Delicious Low Carb Margarita

A cold drink in your hand can make the summer heat much more bearable. A cold drink that is also keto friendly is even better! If you are a margarita fan (and I for sure am!), then we have just the low carb drink recipe for you. This is a recipe you are going to want to memorize for sure- one sip and you will be hooked!

Margaritas have been a summertime staple for years and years. Whether you like your margarita served on the rocks, over some nice big ice cubes, or blended into a smoothie like drink, they are ideal for those hot summer nights (or for day drinking!). But who invented the margarita? How did such a delicious, perfect drink come to be? It all started in a small restaurant near Tijuana, Mexico…

Keto Margarita Recipe

One of the earliest margarita stories claims that restaurant owner Carlos Herrera created the cocktail for a customer who was allergic to many spirits except tequila. Other stories say that the inventor of the margarita was a Dallas area socialite who made the drink at her vacation home for Tommy Hilton. Hilton then brought the drink recipe back to his Hilton hotels where it became a staple at the bars. One more margarita story starts with Jose Cuervo tequila company who ran a campaign with the slogan “Margarita: It’s more that a girl’s name”.

No matter where the margarita began, we know one thing is true- we love it! Luckily, there are a few ways to make this delicious drink low carb. Rejoice all you margarita lovers- you can continue the long standing summer margarita tradition with this keto recipe!

Our recipe starts with white tequila. Choose your favorite brand as they will all work perfectly! You can use a gold tequila if you’d like or want to make a fancier margarita. All tequila has 0 carbs! We like to stick to the basic (but awesome) white tequila as it costs less and the flavor of the lemon and lime will mask some of the tequila taste anyway.

Juice from one lemon and one lime is combined with the tequila and powdered erythritol. We choose the powdered sweetener as it dissolves best in the liquid. If you only have granular erythritol on hand, this will work too but you may need to give the cocktail shaker a few extra shakes to help is dissolve completely.

Crushed ice is poured into the cocktail shake to cool the margarita to perfection. If you prefer a blended version, place all the ingredients into a blender and puree until nice and smooth. Otherwise, just pour the margarita and ice right from the cocktail shaker and into two glasses. Garnish with a slice of lime, some kosher salt or a rim of granular erythritol and your perfect keto summer drink is ready!

If you want to make keto margaritas in a big batch to serve to guests at your next summer BBQ, simply triple or quadruple the recipe. Don’t add the ice until you are ready to serve! You can make the lemon lime, tequila mix a few days in advance. Just a warning though, if you have a big pitcher of margaritas in your fridge, you will likely be tempted to drink a few glasses before your party… but someone has to be the taste tester, right?
