The increasing levels of obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and other diet-related health issues are the main epidemic facing the United States and other developed countries in the world today. A study by the American Heart Association1 finds that one out of every three adult-aged Americans have some sort of cardiovascular disease, and this epidemic has led to 800,000 deaths.

The rising incidence of heart disease to epidemic levels has created a national awareness of the dangers associated with bad diet and an unhealthy, sedentary lifestyle. At the same time, however, heart failure is expected to rise by 46 percent in the coming decade2. These statistics show that there is a disconnect between our understanding of the very real dangers that heart disease, obesity, and diabetes pose and our ability to change our behavior in order to protect our health.

No Time to Exercise

The fitness industry has been growing steadily during the past two decades as gym memberships have grown from around 32 million memberships in 2000 to over 57 million memberships in 20163. Similarly, in the United Kingdom, a new UK private health and fitness club report4 shows that the private health club market will grow to close to 4 billion pounds of total revenue in the coming 5 years.

Despite the fact that we are collectively going to the gym in ever greater numbers, one-fifth of those Britons who sign up for a gym membership eventually cancel that membership because of a lack of time to actually make it to the gym. A similar report finds that Britons are wasting around 558 million pounds yearly on unused gym memberships, and a full 11 percent admit that they have not used their memberships in over a year.

Trying to fit an hour of exercise into a schedule that requires you to spend long hours at the office before rushing home to spend time with the family is close to impossible, and is one of the main reasons that many people simply do not have time to use their gym memberships.

The Rat Race and Eating Choices

Furthermore, the hectic lifestyle that characterizes so many workers in the U.S, the U.K, and other parts of the developed world also leads to poor dietary choices. A study of 2,000 British adults found that 66 percent admitted to eating unhealthy meals due to a lack of time in order to prepare nutritious and healthier meals. Furthermore, 3 out of 4 of those in the survey often skipped meals because of time constraints.

Fortunately, the internet is a great resource for those who do want to discover a wide array of healthy recipes. From low-carb recipes to complete weight loss plans, discovering how to eat healthy does not require you to take become an award-winning chef or invest in a month-long Ayurveda cooking course. Despite the time challenges that many people face, eating healthy and getting the needed amount of exercise should be a priority of every health conscious person.
