Sometimes when you’re on the keto diet, going out for drinks can be the real challenge. While your buds knock back some carby beers, you have to carefully consider your options. When it comes to drinking on keto, it helps to keep an eye out for low-carb wines and beers, but for the most part, we’re safe with liquors such as Vodka, Tequila, and Gin (oh my!). The challenge is to avoid sugary mixers that are loaded with artificial colors and flavors.

Nauti Seltzer Isn’t So Naughty

The Nauti Seltzer company out of Massachusetts wants to change that. The low-carb seltzer line has only 5 grams of carbs per 12 fluid ounces and 5 percent alcohol by volume, making these seltzers a refreshing way to enjoy a nice summertime buzz. They come in delicious flavors such as cranberry, lemon-lime, raspberry, grapefruit, and blueberry lemonade.

According to their website, Nauti Seltzer “was created from our desire to bring together two of our favorite things: enjoying both a healthy, active lifestyle and good times with friends. This is a low calorie, low carb, ready to drink, new alternative in the fast-growing hard soda category. Nauti Seltzer appeals to the sophisticated adult beverage consumer who is looking for refreshing alternatives but does not prefer the sugary and sweet products that are currently flooding the market.”1 Amen to that!

Their newest concoction? The sparkling rosé flavor, that features hints of mandarin orange, peach, raspberries, and cherry among its refreshing seltzer bubbles. The flavor will be included in the company’s Party Pack soon, which includes three cans of each of their five flavors for a rollicking good time with health-minded friends. And “health-minded” is the key word, because it’s so good to have a low-calorie, low-carbohydrate, no-nonsense alcohol to choose from among the other diet-killers in the category.

To Lose Weight, Lose the Booze

Alcohol inhibits our ability to lose weight and stay on the weight loss path more than people realize. Alcohol slows the body’s fat burning abilities. To make matters worse, people eat about 30 percent more food when they consume alcohol, probably because alcohol inhibits our ability to judge fullness and other choices around food, such as what to eat and whether we’ve had enough.

In general, dietitians tell us not to drink our calories. A pina colada has a similar number of calories to a doughnut. A glass of wine has a similar number of calories to a slice of cake. A pint of lager has a similar number of calories to a slice of pizza. What we put in our drinks doesn’t help. Mixers are chock-full of sugars and artificial ingredients, which can wreck our gut health and fight against our weight loss plans. The best drinks to order? A vodka and soda with lemon, a light beer, a gin and tonic with lime, or a red wine. If all else fails (or even if it doesn’t) you may want to check out a Nauti Seltzer.
